Coffee…oh the love I have for coffee. However, a new love that is. Taste buds change as we get older, which I find fascinating, and for me coffee was one of them! Or it was that all of my friends would order french vanilla iced coffees with such a large amount of cream and sugar that you couldn’t even taste the coffee haha. Either way, THANK GOODNESS for the temp job I had a few years back, with the fanciest coffee machine ever, that I began to experiment with and began to love the natural taste of coffee. And the benefits it has for me!
First of all, for me, it has to be dark roast. The darker, and richer the better. I now not only have a Keurig for k-cups, I also have an old school coffee maker and prefer to use the fresh grounds most of the time. I add a little cinnamon to the grounds before starting the coffee which truly adds a touch of magic. I am a 3-4 scoops kind of girl as well, a Gilmore Girl at heart I like to say. From the smell of it steaming and starting, to the first sip…perfection. I either drink it black, or add a very small bit of almond milk before devouring a cup or two. I always add a scoop of my further food collagen powder as well. Perfect start to a morning.
Most think coffee “wakes them up” or “gives them energy” when in fact when coffee enters your body, the caffeine attaches itself to the adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is a nervous system depressant, meaning it promotes sleep. When caffeine attaches itself the effects are lessened and your brain becomes more stimulated. In turn, this increased brain activity stimulates releases of adrenaline, which gives us a small boost of energy. So COOL!
Another box that coffee checks, for me, is how it affects my migraines. From the National Headache Foundation: “Caffeine can be a headache trigger or headache inhibitor. Before a headache or migraine, blood vessels tend to enlarge. Because it contains “vasoconstrictive” properties that cause the blood vessels to narrow and restrict blood flow, caffeine can aid in head pain relief. When caffeine is added to the combination of acetaminophen and aspirin, the pain relieving effect is increased by 40%.” so awesome. Although it doesn’t cure my migraines, it certainly is a key component in my 5 step homemade migraine fix. (coffee, heat on my neck, ice on my eyes/forehead, essentials oils on my temples, Excedrin migraine)
I’m not too picky on brands and types of coffee, aside from the dark roast preference, but I’ve added some links below to some amazing companies that don’t just sell great quality coffee, they give back to our world that is in such need of some love. Links are below the pictures below!
